Twitter Marketing Tips by Greg Martin

Article taken from Greg's blog post Twitter Marketing Tips

Here is a brief overview of what you could/should be doing…

Promote other people as much as you can - this shows people that you are not just interested in pushing your own agenda and that you have others interests at heart.

Post valuable and helpful information - that hasn't come from you that you think would benefit those who are following you. Remember that people are looking for answers to their marketing problems and if you are providing valuable content that helps them you will be seen as a valuable person that is worth following.

Post valuable information that you have created - finally it’s time for you to promote your own content. There is nothing wrong with promoting yourself as long as it isn’t all sales and spammy. I like to direct people through to content on my Blog that can help others in a big way. My goal is quality first before quantity.

Answer the questions going on in your followers minds - This is an important tip, like any other form of marketing online you need to consider what the conversation is that is going on inside your prospect or followers mind. They have followed you for a reason and you need to be catering to that reason.

I personally think it’s ok to be posting non-marketing content like “having dinner at my favourite restaurant”. But if that is all you do then your followers will get a little tired of that. Your postings still need to be targeted to the niche of people who are following you and that is best achieved by asking yourself the question “what is going on right now in my followers mind?”

Thank people for following you - this is the right thing to do but it can become a time consuming issue if you don’t automate your activity. I will get to automation in a moment but thanking those that follow you is very important and you need get this happening ASAP.

Engage in conversation - This is a powerful way to get followers. You need to realise that whenever you do this the entire following of the person you are conversing with gets your posts with your Twitter name on it. This works powerfully when you are conversing with top industry leaders who have large lists.

My first encounter with this was with @Mike_Dillard who at the time had a following of over 12,000 people. From the brief conversation I had with Mike I saw my follow numbers escalate for almost a week. Believe me it works.

Twitter Automation

This is seriously awesome and worth your attention. Automation is your key to growing a profitable list.

TweetLater combined with Twitter has become the fastest method I have ever engaged in to create traffic. Twitter is very responsive and by using this service you can be guaranteed of instant response to your postings.

TweetLater is a free service which is great to get you started however you may be interest in the Pro account. With the Pro account you can create a series of posts that can be sent to your list 24 hours a day completely on Autopilot.

Of course there is a fee for the Pro version but the return I am receiving from my Twitter marketing more than recovers the cost of the Pro service. It’s a great way to generate leads and revenue at the same time.

Rather than me telling you about it here just follow the link and check out Tweet Later.

Automatic Exponential List Building

I would like to introduce this totally free service to you as a great way to build your following on Autopilot. I don’t recomend that this be your only way of building your following however it is a great way to at least get started… and very simple to use.

I guess you could say that this is a combination of Twitter and network marketing.

Follow Those Who Interest You

Another great tool I use for folliwing people automatically who are in the same market I am interested in is Twollo.

With Twollo you can automatically follow anyone that uses certain keys words. For example if you are into Search Engine Optimisation or SEO for short, you can enter SEO into Twollo and it will automatically the person who posted SEO in their tweet.

I have dozens on word combinations I am tracking and have followed hundreds of people automatically with this tool. And they are all discussing the subjects I am interested in.

How cool!

Advanced Twitter List Building & Marketing

Once you have grasped the basics of Twitter etiquette & automation it’s time to get involved in some serious list building techniques.

The program that has opened my eyes in a dramatic way to building a large list fast is Brute Force Twitter. Using the techniques described in the training I am watching hundreds of people follow me everyday. Some days I have had close to a thousand follows but you need to keep in mind this is being done over multiple lists.

As of this writing I am still in the early stages of my list building activities so what ever you do, don’t take my word for it, go and check out the guys page and read it for yourself.

Additional Notes - As of July 2009 I have just updated this post now to include this new tool I am using called Himmingbird. In fact after using Humming bird for two months now I can safely say that there is simply nothing else you should be using to build a large Twitter list with.

.
Engaging The Twitter Community

You may have already noticed that using the Twitter website to interact with the community is a proverbial pain in the butt. It’s not designed for ease of use.

The best tool I have come across for to engage with my Twitter following is Seesmic Desktop. If you haven’t yet used this service then you are not getting the best out of Twitter. It’s an absolute must.

The cool thing about Seesmic Desktop is that it allows you to engage multiple Twitter accounts at one time. So no matter who replies to you from which account you can easily receive your replies into Seesmic Desktop and reply back.

.
Tracking Your Traffic & Clicks

If you are thinking of marketing like a professional on Twitter then you are going to have to track your traffic and clicks.

As of this writing I am receiving around 4,000 clicks per day from two lists of around 43,000 followers. These tweets are being sent for different blog posts and for different target audiences. But that’s the overall result as it stands now.

That’s not a bad effort and the way I can know how I am doing is by using a service called Bit.ly I have also used Budurl but I like the graphs on Bit.ly better.

Google those terms and open your free account, add your links and include the shortened links into your tweets and your away.

Conclusion

So there you go, if you have any comments or feedback then please feel free to post them below. Hope you enjoyed the post.

Greg, I'm confused about services that boost your followers. Doesn't this automation keep you from having personal connections with your followers? When I send a personal response to someone who wants to follow me, and I don't receive a personal response back, it's a big turnoff. Also, I gave me username and password to an automated service...decided not to do it and have been plagued with spam from them ever since. I know it has hurt me. And twitter doesn't allow you to communicate personally with them. Another thing. many services say they're free and you see that they're not free.

I appreciate your very helpful Twitter information and plan on checking much of it out. You haven't mentioned TweetDeck. Do you use it?

Hi Jennifer,

I must say I don't know how to respond. I guess it all depends on your own experience with Twitter, and for me it hasn't been like that.

I will comment on each of your points separately...

Doesn't this automation keep you from having personal connections with your followers? If you are looking for personal connections I suppose it could. I am not looking for that level of personal connection with Twitter, I use skype to stay in touch for that. I use Twitter more like an introduction tool that helps me connect with new people. I don't use it much to maintain relationships. But then I do have multiple accounts and there is one I tend to use more for that type of reason than the others.

When I send a personal response to someone who wants to follow me, and I don't receive a personal response back, it's a big turnoff. I guess that's the way it is. I don't monitor personal responses (DM's), only retweets (RT's). Probably because there are so many junk DM's that come back to me I just don't read them all. And most DM's are automated so I don't bother. Replies are a little different though because they aren't automated, so when someone types in a reply it is a reply to something that you have posted. DM's to me are more like emails.

I gave me username and password to an automated service...decided not to do it and have been plagued with spam from them ever since. Yes that could happen to anyone and that is just bad luck.

I know it has hurt me. And twitter doesn't allow you to communicate personally with them. Another thing. many services say they're free and you see that they're not free. This is the internet after all, I know it might not feel good but that's the way it is. As much as I love the internet and marketing online there is a lot I don't like about it either.

I appreciate your very helpful Twitter information and plan on checking much of it out. Thankyou!

You haven't mentioned TweetDeck. Do you use it? I ran Tweetdeck until I discovered Seesmic Desktop. You can run multiple accounts with that which makes it super easy to interact with lot's of people at one time. This is also my response to your first point. Seesmic for me has taken the hard work out of Twitter and made Twitter far more sociable that it ever was before I had it.

I hope that helps you there Jennifer. Thanks for your reply to the post too.

Hi Greg,

This was very informative. I haven't got much out of tweeter. I do have a good amount of followers( around 1650 in 3 months) but that is about as far as it goes. I am going to look at some of the sites you posted here.

Thanks,
Sherry

Hi Greg

Thank you for all the Twitter marketing tips.

One tool that I haven't seen is your post is Twitter Karma. It is important to build your lists but also to cull your lists of anyone not following you back. Twitter Karma (a free tool) helps with all of this - give it a try!

I agree about not just promoting yourself. If you are genuinely interested in folk then you don't do that, but let's not kid ourselves that we are not trying to make contact to build our businesses. I find Twitter does not work for me and I really do mix my messages between business, famous quotes and down-to-earth comments like this one: "A true friend is one who overlooks your broken fence and admires the flowers in your garden." I sent that one to my dear old Mom because she thinks the sun shines out of some nether region! Well, mothers do, don't they?
I am trying to further my business by finding and passing on details of free - or cheap - resources that I am using to advertise and which I am sure will be of benefit to everyone else of similar mind. Naturally when you join these sites you are furthering my business, but if it doesn't cost you, no problem.
Here's a daily blog I just posted to my friends at List Volta -

Hi all! Just wanted to give you all a heads-up on a great new advertising resource where you can get your message in front of thousands of folk - sure to be read. My sponsor in Mammoth List (I am account No.1 in ML simply because I was in touch with the owner right from the start) has recommended this to me and he knows what he is talking about! http://www.adflasher.net/online_advertising?banksouth
This is not a scam, not a ponzi and more than a traffic exchange. All member ads are sitting in front of you and flash in rotation. You can also earn money daily by clicking on the ads - that's how they get seen. Brilliant. Regards, Dave West PS - Ok, and to be straight, join on my link and I will get paid 10% of any ad revenue you spend at the site. So will you from your referral URL. So if you can refer a few people and they advertise, you can use your commissions for what would then be free advertising. Cool! :-)BTW - List Volta is still the best!!! Oh! and so is my favorite downline builder - http://www.advertopia.com/cgi-bin/ref.cgi/36344
where I am hoping the owner will add AdFlasher to make it easier for us all to build another lucrative downline.
===========================

So to my That's Business friends: I am always on the lookout for websites where we can promote for free. I won't give up on Twitter but all I am met with so far (and I have upwards of 800 followers) is a long silence. Maybe I'm in the wrong biz!
